Trekking with a Silva Compass

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by Lena

A five-day trek to Point Lenana in Mt. Kenya National Park can be done with or without porters and tour guides but without a map, an array of gadgets or even the sun and the moon, one can surely get lost.

According to a research scientist, Jan Souman, at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, people do walk in circles and have a tendency to get lost without the proper training and equipment.  The scientist and his team sent test subjects out in a German forest and the Sahara desert to find out if they could walk in a straight line.  One group were set out on sunny days and another group on cloudy days and at night.  The groups were observed via GPS over the course of hours.  Those walking under the sun kept a relatively straight course but once the sun was out, they began to walk aimlessly even though they believed they maintained their pace.

Save our Earth

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 by macinger84

If you think, you are not doing adequate efforts for the environment by changing your incandescent light bulbs with LED or CFL lights and composting your kitchen waste, perhaps you are ready to make a deeper assurance to environmental stewardship.

Some of these stratagems might seem a little essential, but they are among the most important actions you can take to shield and conserve Earth’s environment.

Plan well
overpopulationOverpopulation is debatably the world’s most severe environmental problem, as it intensifies all of the other problems. The worldwide population was 3 billion in 1959 and increased to 6 billion in 1999, a raise of 100 percent in 40 years. According to existing projections, the global population will spread out to 9 billion by 2040.Earth is a closed system with restricted resources. As the global population grows, our possessions must elongate to serve more and more populace. In the future, that will no longer be feasible. Finally, we need to overturn this growth tendency by slowly but surely bringing the human being population of our planet back downward to a more controllable size. This means more citizens must decide to have fewer kids. This might sound easy on the surface, but the constrain to reproduce is elementary in all genus and the verdict to limit or give up the experience is an arousing, cultural or spiritual one for many people.

Use Less Water—and Keep It Clean

reduce reuse recycle water

Unsullied, clean water is important to life—no one can survive long without it and yet it is one of the endangered and most scarce resources on our increasingly brittle planet.
Water envelops more than 70 percent of the Earth’s facade, but most of it is salt water. Freshwater supplies are much more confined, and at present one third of the world’s citizens lack right to use the clean drinking water. In the United Nations, 95 percent of the metropolis worldwide still plunks raw trash into their water supplies. Predictably, 80 percent of all sickness and ailments in budding countries can be linked to unhygienic water.

Eat sensibly
Eating sensibly also means consuming less meat and less animal products for example dairy products and eggs, or possibly none at all. It is an issue of good stewardship of our limited resources.

Renewable_EnergyPreserve Energy—and move on to Renewable Energy

Walk, or use public transportation more than your own vehicles. Not only will you be in good health and help to safeguard valuable energy resources, you will also hoard money. As per the study by the American Public Transportation Association, people that use public haulage can lessen their domestic expenses by $6,200 per annum, more than the standard U.S. household spends on foodstuff each year.

Conserve and Go Green
conserve-energyThere are many other ways you can save energy—like turning lights off and unplugging your electrical appliances when you are not using them, not overcooling or overheating, your office and home. One way to initiate is to get a free energy inspection from your local utility. Choose renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. For instance, many civic utilities now offer green energy options so that you may get all or at least some of your electricity from solar, wind, or other renewable sources of energy.

The great outdoors has been a part of our history and there are a lot of people who have become famous due to their exploits in the wild. There is also some part in each and every person that makes him yearn to go outdoors and rough it out for a while. But most of us have been living in cities where amenities are just close by and anything we want or need is always just a few minutes away. We are no longer equipped to survive outside for extended periods of time. That is why we need to have the right set of equipment and knowledge whenever we go camping or do other outdoor activities. Knowledge is very important as equipment is absolutely worthless if you do not know how to use them.

Aside from the necessities like food and water, you would also need to prepare the right clothes for the kind of environment you would be going to. Thick jackets are the norm for cold areas but don’t think that because you are going somewhere warm, you would be fine with sleeveless shirts and short pants. Tropical areas usually hold insects that can bother you to no end and bringing some clothes that can cover your whole body, along with an insect repellent spray is a good idea.

You should also consider your comfort when going outside as the amount of gear that you carry can often be too heavy. Trekking poles help you maintain your balance as you negotiate the terrain and can be used as a pole to lean to whenever you take a break. Safety is also a concern when you are outside and getting lost is quite a possibility. Therefore it is essential to bring a mobile phone or a GPS device just so you can find out where you are. The problem with these devices is that they are not very reliable as they can break or run out of battery.

As a failsafe, you need to bring along the most basic equipment for navigation, a map and a compass. Maps can be acquired almost anywhere so make sure you buy a map of the area you are going to before leaving. You would also need a reliable compass, like those from the Voyager or Ranger series from Silva of Sweden, in order to get your bearing and find out the right direction that you should be heading to. You migh also want to look into the binoculars that are available from Silva as you can use those to enjoy the sights more or to spot landmarks in case you get lost. The last thing that you should bring is the M4 headlamp from Silva, even if you don’t intend to stay out until the evening as you would never know what would happen. It can provide up to 150 hours of light with its battery and since it straps to your head, you would not have to hold it freeing your hands.

How to use a Silva Compass and Map?

Friday, June 26th, 2009 by Apple Bazaar

Just came across this youtube video on how to use a Silva compass together with the map. I find this video very useful because i do get quite a few queries from customers on how to use a silva compass. As the video emphasized, the basic way of using a map correctly is knowing how to orientated the map with the compass.

I remembered this was also the very first navigation lesson i learnt in my army day. As the video stated, orientating the map with the compass is the basis and let get it into this habit when nagivating out in the wild.
