Christmas Gift Ideas for Women

Friday, December 18th, 2009 by Lena

gifts-for-women_birthday gifts_unique gift ideas_decorative livingChristmas is one of the rare times of the year when we think of others more than we think of ourselves.  During this time, we are consumed about what gifts we could give or how we are going to express our love or appreciation to our friends and relatives.  We are so selfless at this time that we brave the traffic and the crowds in the malls to buy gifts and trinkets to give away.

Sometimes, though, we get stumped.  We get confused and do not know what to get.  This is especially so if you are buying gifts for the opposite sex, as you are never quite sure what they would like to have for Christmas.

Run Your Way to Health

Monday, October 12th, 2009 by Lena

Running as a means to get physically well and fit became popular in the 70s. Running was coined “jogging” if you were trotting or running in a slowly and in a leisurely pace. The 70s was also the time that running shoes were first conceptualized by such brands as Nike and Adidas. A jogger or an amateur runner must have running shoes! So, the very enterprising small and innovative Nike thought of the first commercial running shoes for running enthusiasts.

There has been many school of thoughts about running or jogging. Some advocates say that a jogger should be all bundled up (even if one lives in the tropics) when jogging. Thus, jogging pants and hoodies became a craze. Some say it’s best to jog early in the morning right before the sun rises so it was pretty much appropriate to don sweat shirts and jogging pants complete with head bands and wrist bands for the sweat. Remember Rocky the movie? Think Sylvester Stallone and you pretty much have an idea of how “joggers” used to look like.

Then came a time when jogging and running advocates thought that runners and joggers are better off wearing shorts and muscle shirts. The world then saw a new generation of joggers and runners in their skimpiest attires! The evolution of jogging and running in terms of advocates, enthusiasts and attires, was a wonder to see. Today, the leisure sports has a great following for marathons, half-marathons and 5K and 10 K runs events are everywhere, open to all those who love to run.

10,000 steps a day challenge

Jogging and running have also become a favorite way to lose weight and keep fit. The activity, as a means to lose weight is cheap and highly accessible. You can just about jog anywhere for free! You can jog in the park, at the local track and field, around the block, or from one point to another, or an indoor treadmill. If you don’t have access to any convenient jogging route, you can even jog in place! The important thing is for you to be able to count your paces or how many steps you have taken.

A pedometer is a handy tool or gadget for counting your steps. The pedometer senses your body and counts the step that you do. The count is then converted into distance after knowing your average stride. It is recommended that you log in 6,000 steps for your health; 10,000 steps for weight loss when you count the steps that you make all day. An uninterrupted 4,000 to 6,000 steps is recommended for weight loss.

There are a lot of pedometers available in the market today. There is the regular pedometer which just counts the step that you make and convert them into distance. There’s the pedometer with a radio and another model with a heart monitor. There’s even one that could convert your workout into calories. If you want to make a log of all your jogging or running sessions, there’s a gadget that could transfer data from your pedometer to the internet. These are great gadgets for joggers and runners out there.

Healthy Living: Exercise

Sunday, October 11th, 2009 by macinger84

Exercise is the most common advise when people are trying to loose weight or to stay fit, and for good reason. Exercise builds up your muscles and bones while burning excess fat from your body. But despite being an excellent method of losing weight, you would also need to pay attention to your diet in order for it to work.

Aside from the obvious fat burning process that most people are aiming for, there are also some benefits that you can get from exercising that are not that obvious. Regular exercise helps you to build and tone your muscles that makes you look good. Bigger muscles also helps you lose weight a lot faster because more muscles burns more energy. This translates to more calories burned even when you are only doing your regular daily routine. And since the heart is also a muscle, regular exercise can also develop your heart, not to mention unclogging your arteries of harmful plaque that can lead to heart failure.

The problem that most people have with exercise is the time that it takes. The world we are living in today is quite fast paced and we often find ourselves out of time. People also tend to forget their gym appointments or is often to tired to even workout at home at the end of the day. The most effective style in achieving a daily exercise routine is to incorporate it in what you do daily.

The 10,000 steps a day movement is geared towards informing people about how much physical activity is necessary daily. It works on the very simple premise that if you walk 10,000 steps every single day, you are already getting the barest minimum in exercise. Although you can count or estimate how many steps you are actually taking every day, the easiest and most accurate way is by using a pedometer. This device attaches to either your belt or in your shoe and detects the vibrations of your body that happens with every step. There are a lot of pedometers available and you can choose which one fits you properly.

If you already know how many steps you are taking every day and you find that it is insufficient, you can utilize a few tricks to increase it. The most common is to walk instead of riding. This is very possible when going to a friend’s house a few blocks away or maybe up or down a few flights of stairs.

The point of exercise is to keep your body moving and consuming energy. You can exercise whenever and wherever, not only inside a gym.
