Sturdy Momo Steering Wheel for Your Car

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 by Lena

Among all the parts for cars, the part that is most possibly taken for granted is the steering wheel.  Most owners may customize every conceivable car part such as the body, wheels and mufflers, yet customizing the steering wheel may be the last thing on their minds.  The body gets new coats of paint, sometimes gets custom artwork designs and accessories to make the car more aerodynamically competitive.  The wheels that come with the car when it was bought could be replaced by ones with cooler-looking designs.  Even the mufflers get changed by the normal car fanatic.

Given all the changes above and more, the changes that could be made to make a car unique to its owner can be endless.  However, even the most avid car fanatic may forget to change a car’s lowly, default steering wheel.

A car’s steering wheel maybe the most important part of the steering system of a vehicle. It is the equipment that gives you full control of your car. Back in the early 1930’s cars were designed to have non-safety steering wheels. A non safety steering wheel is rigid with a non collapsible steering column that if you were unlucky enough to have a head-on collision the steering column might actually impale you.

The design of steering wheels to meet a high level of safety has been in progress for almost a century now. There’s the tilt wheel, the telescope wheel, the adjustable steering column, and the swing away steering wheel that has been invented and used all for the quest of a safe steering wheel.

There are those who advocate the old 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock handling of a steering wheel. The advent of air bags changed this concept. There are now experts who claim that an 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock handling of a steering wheel is more apt to accommodate a deployed air bag. Again, the 8-4 hand position on the steering wheel makes it slightly hard to steer the wheel into abrupt positions. So, it’s back to the 10-2 and of late the 9-3 hand positions on the steering wheel.

Anyone who is remotely interested in cars and car racing has heard of MOMO. The catchy initials stand for Moretti-Monza. MOMO Srl was founded by an Italian race car enthusiast named Gianpiero Moretti in the 1960’s. Moretti designed a smaller diameter steering wheel with a large handgrip. The handgrip made it easier to grasp the steering wheel thus making the car easier to maneuver. The company started out as key sponsors in racing cars prototype including the Ferrari 333 SP. In 1969, MOMO Srl built its first commercial production plant in Tregnago, Verona. Although the company has changed hands, the company continues to produce high quality steering wheels, gear shift knobs, and alloy wheels for the regular consumers. For the racers out there, MOMO racing suits and helmets are top of the line.
