How To Dress and Match Clothes

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Lena

Clothes make the man or woman, they say. Whether your wardrobe is straight off the fashion show runway or warrants a visit from the fashion police, looking stylish and put together is what everyone is aiming for. And how you select and care for your clothes would make a huge difference in the long run. Having a good sense of style doesn’t only mean having all the latest trendy items. You can still look good with a few set of wardrobes. It’s important to have a few well-made garments than a closet full of poorly made ones. You just have to own the basic pieces and a few critical accessories and you’re good to go. You can mix and match and get the most out of what you have.

But first, what are the basics that should make up any woman’s wardrobe?
• A pair of jeans
• Black tank
• Long-sleeve white T-shirt
• Khakis
• White Button-down
• Black Pants
• Black suit
• LBD (little black dress)
• Lined Jacket or Blazer
• Scarf

Here are some tips on how to mix and match the basics with each other and other trends:

• A blank tank can be worn with almost everything from a gym class to casual outings and from khakis to a cocktail skirt.

• Choose a slim-fit T-shirt that fits well but does not cling. This shirt can be worn with a pair of denim jeans for casual wear or a pair of pinstriped pants in the office.

• A pair of blank pants can be worn all year long. So get the most out of these pants by selecting a style and make with an all-season fabric like tropical wool or viscose.

• When shopping for a denim jacket, always go for a darker wash. This will be an advantage as you can wear this in any type of occasion or event. A slimmer fit is also better because it looks more polished.

• White tees can be paired with a trendy jacket for casual dinners or night outs. Just accessorize with a string of pearls or chunky necklace. White tees can wear away quickly so give up on those designer versions and buy the cheaper ones, then replace as needed.

• Aside from the blacks and whites, navy blues and browns can easily be paired with numerous clothing and styles.

• When in doubt, always wear black. A black suit is perfect for the office but it can stretch until night time with a wide belt with funky buckle and heavier make-up. Change those pumps into stilettos and you can mesh well with other partyphile in the club scene.

• The little black dress worn with a blazer is ideal attire in the office. Come night time, the blazer comes off and is replaced with some accessories and you’re ready for a dinner date or a night out with the girls.

• Accessories play a big part in making the wardrobe. Cool earrings can transform a plain Jane. Invest in gold golf-sized hoops as they suit everyone. And please don’t wear over-the-top necklace with wild earrings together.

• A cotton scarf or kerchief tied around the neck and worn with a T-shirt makes for a French feel that works for all ages.
These are just some of the ways you can mix and match the basics to come up with numerous outfits. But like anything that works wonders, there is no shortcut to learning how to dress well. So have fun experimenting.

The Right Clothes for the Right Occasion

Friday, October 16th, 2009 by Lena

You know the feeling when you had been invited to some kind of party, but don’t have a clue what to wear?  You rummage through your decades old closet, with tons of clothes in it, but still find nothing appropriate or just don’t know if you have anything that is appropriate.  If you go through these situations a lot, then read on so you will be much better prepared for that next special occasion.

The basics

For times that you have no idea how the attendees will dress, just keep your outfit simple.  Choose a statement piece of accessory and build around it.  Try to avoid clashing colors or textures.  Make sure everything fits nicely and that nothing pops out, like your bra strap.  If you are dressing simply, you can opt to wear bold makeup colors like red lipstick and really bright-colored eye shadow.  However, if your clothes are rather attention-seeking, then tone it down a bit with natural-looking makeup.

Dress for a wedding

Back in the day, you weren’t supposed to wear anything black for a wedding.  These days, what to wear to a wedding depends on the time of year or what themes the couples want to go for.   For Spring/Summer weddings, light-colored dresses made with flowy fabrics are usually acceptable.  For winter weddings, probably something more warm.  The best way to decide is to ask the host for advice.  To play it safe, bring a pretty scarf or a pair of dressy earrings which you can whip out just in case.

Dress for a job interview

Obviously, you should not wear anything casual if you are going for an interview with a large, traditional company.  Wearing a suit or anything business-like will be more appropriate, to show your interviewer than you are very interested in the position.  However, with companies that are in the creative or artistic field, it pays to be a little bit more out of the box, as it shows you have your own personal style and that you show your creativity through what you wear.

Dress for a funeral or wake

It is always safe to wear anything black when going to a wake, but you don’t really have to.  You can wear mostly anything, just as long as it’s respectful.  Clothes that have neutral or muted colors like grey, navy blue, brown or dark green may be your best bet.  Make sure your clothes are not too short and have a respectable neckline.  Patterns are also okay, but would have to be discreet and dark.  Keep your accessories simple like stud earrings or simple pearl jewelry.  Do not wear anything that’s too eye-catching, unless you are specifically told to.

Dress to impress

If you’ve been invited for a first date or meeting your in-laws, then you are pressured to wear something which will impress them.  On occasions like this, go with something that shows your personality, without being too risky.  To start with, choose clothes with colors that you know flatter you or an outfit that you had been complimented on a few times previously.  Avoid something that may be too tight, too short or with a very low neckline.

Look Hip and Cool With Ease

Thursday, October 15th, 2009 by Lena

For many fashionistas, dressing is an art form.  They are always updated with the latest trends and call their handbags or shoes on a first-name basis.  But what about the rest of us mere mortals, who are clueless about what clothes to wear on our next dinner date?  How do you become effortlessly stylish?

Know your body shape

To successfully find clothes that will flatter you, you need to know what parts of your body to highlight and which ones to play down.  If you have broad shoulders, a well-endowed bust and narrow hips, then you have an apple shape.  You have a pear shape, if your hips are the broader than your bust.  If your waist measurement is less than 9 inches compared to your hips or bust, then you have a straight body shape.  Finally, you are of hourglass shape if your bust and hip measurements are nearly equal and you have a narrow waist.

Dress according to your shape

If you are apple-shaped, wear clothes which highlight your slim legs and buttocks.  Downplay your arms by wearing half to long sleeves and low-cut (but not plunging) necklines.  Emphasize your shoulders and arms by wearing halter necks and dark colored trousers and A-line or straight-cut skirts.  For straight shapes, wear feminine ruffles and frills to emphasize your curves.  If you have an hourglass figure, then you can wear mostly anything.

Following the trends

Trends come and go, so you have to be wise about picking the styles you want to pick.  Do not spend too much on trends that you think will be old news next week and splurge on those that you think will be classics.  For example, a good tailored pencil skirt will never go out of style.  Do not let the fashion industry pressure you, though, and just try to be comfortable with what you feel expresses your personality best.

Dress according to your age

Another factor to consider when wanting to be stylish is your age.  Young adults and women in their 20’s are nearly at full liberty to express themselves through their clothes.  If you are a woman of a more mature age, however, then certain limits need to be considered.  A woman in her 40’s, for example, should not even consider wearing a micro-miniskirt or tops with very low necklines.  Clothes that give a sophisticated vibe would be more appropriate.

Makeup and Accessories

As a general rule, natural-looking makeup is more acceptable to wear during the day and bolder, darker colors can be worn in the evenings.  A regular manicure and pedicure also gives the impression that you value good grooming.  So if your nail polish is chipping, then replace them or remove them completely.

Your shoes and bags do not have to match anymore, like how grandma used to.  These days, you may opt to choose either a statement bag or pair of shoes, then building the outfit around them.  The same rule applies to jewelry – just choose a state necklace, ring or pair of earrings and leave the rest muted or leave them out altogether.
