Adventurers have risked life and limb to experience nature at its unspoiled best

The great outdoors have long been a challenge to the more adventurous travellers.  Whatever their reasons—getting back to nature, curiosity or self-renewal—adventurers have risked life and limb to experience nature at its unspoiled best.  The appeal of wild rivers, unclaimed mountains and even the most remote rain forest are what drive these adventure seekers to explore without hesitation.

The current craze for camping and trekking can be traced, in part, to the 1960s crowd who travelled the world, curious about non-Western cultures and people.  Hiking is also becoming more popular.  Today, people hike for recreation.  Many Europeans spend their summer holidays in the mountains and quite an increasing number of Americans literally following in their footsteps.  The hikes chosen are moderate to slightly challenging and anyone in a reasonably good shape should be able to handle this comfortably.

Outdoor Trips and Gear

Sunday, October 4th, 2009 by macinger84

The great outdoors has been a part of our history and there are a lot of people who have become famous due to their exploits in the wild. There is also some part in each and every person that makes him yearn to go outdoors and rough it out for a while. But most of us have been living in cities where amenities are just close by and anything we want or need is always just a few minutes away. We are no longer equipped to survive outside for extended periods of time. That is why we need to have the right set of equipment and knowledge whenever we go camping or do other outdoor activities. Knowledge is very important as equipment is absolutely worthless if you do not know how to use them.

Aside from the necessities like food and water, you would also need to prepare the right clothes for the kind of environment you would be going to. Thick jackets are the norm for cold areas but don’t think that because you are going somewhere warm, you would be fine with sleeveless shirts and short pants. Tropical areas usually hold insects that can bother you to no end and bringing some clothes that can cover your whole body, along with an insect repellent spray is a good idea.

You should also consider your comfort when going outside as the amount of gear that you carry can often be too heavy. Trekking poles help you maintain your balance as you negotiate the terrain and can be used as a pole to lean to whenever you take a break. Safety is also a concern when you are outside and getting lost is quite a possibility. Therefore it is essential to bring a mobile phone or a GPS device just so you can find out where you are. The problem with these devices is that they are not very reliable as they can break or run out of battery.

As a failsafe, you need to bring along the most basic equipment for navigation, a map and a compass. Maps can be acquired almost anywhere so make sure you buy a map of the area you are going to before leaving. You would also need a reliable compass, like those from the Voyager or Ranger series from Silva of Sweden, in order to get your bearing and find out the right direction that you should be heading to. You migh also want to look into the binoculars that are available from Silva as you can use those to enjoy the sights more or to spot landmarks in case you get lost. The last thing that you should bring is the M4 headlamp from Silva, even if you don’t intend to stay out until the evening as you would never know what would happen. It can provide up to 150 hours of light with its battery and since it straps to your head, you would not have to hold it freeing your hands.

Let’s Go Camping!

Friday, October 2nd, 2009 by Lena

It used to be that camping was for roughing it out. Remember those old Wild West movies where cowboys spend nights out in the open with just blankets for protection, and a campfire for light, for cooking and for warding off bears and snakes. Times have changed and camping is now considered an outdoor recreational activity that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of gender and age.

You can choose what kind of “camping” you would like to experience. There’s the high tech kind of camping involving an RV, short for recreational vehicle. This type of campers arrive in their own RV equipped with electricity, bathroom, air-conditioned bedrooms and even a collapsible patio. Then there’s the survivalist kind of camping where a camper is equipped with little more than his boots and maybe a jungle knife. Now there’s the happy camper who “camps” in permanent camping facilities or camp grounds. Most camping entails some sort of hiking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, or biking. Whatever activity is included, it is best to pack light without sacrificing comfort.

High Tech and Lightweight Tent

High Tech and Lightweight Tent

If you are the RV type of camper, you need not worry about packing light and using lightweight materials and utensils. However, if you are the backpacking kind of camper, you seriously have to pack light and probably buy all those lightweight materials for ease in movement. A serious backpacker or trekker need to take the right supplies and utensils to make for a successful camping.

The weight of your backpack should be just right for your height, weight and strength. The recommended that your backpack be not more than 2 kilos, your 2-person tent no more than 2.5 kilos, your sleeping bag about 1 kilo, and other supplies like food and rain gear should be no more than the combined weight of 2.5 kilos. The total overall weigh might be too much or too little for some. The ideal is to carry the right equipment and supplies that you can bear. If you carry in your person a cooking pan that weighs 500 grams, then that’s just too heavy in proportion to the total ideal weight that you are supposed to carry.

This is why it’s important to use light weight materials for your camping needs. Camping materials and supplies are a different kind of breed – as they come in waterproof, fire-retardant, and uber light materials. Carrying a light load would basically make you a “happy camper” as you can lug up and about without your stuff bogging you down. Remember thought that carrying a lighter load should not mean sacrificing essentials. It is carrying lighter and smaller equipments.

The available camping gear in the market today is unbelievable. There are categories for cooking gear, sleeping gear, survival gear, entertainment gear, mosquito gear, repair products, first-aid and emergency gear and many more. The most important thing to consider before you set off for camp is to make a list of all the things you would need for the duration of your camping trip. After that, buy the things you need and have fun camping.
