Spring Cleaning for the New Year

Monday, February 8th, 2010 by Lena

Spring cleaning is usually done after winter when the temperature is right for hard work, and it’s more efficient to remove dirt and air out the house after it has been closed all winter.  This is also the best time to update your room interior to match the color and atmosphere of spring.

Choosing and Using Equipment

There’s no need to return to the cleaning closet every time you need something if you have a cleaning basket or cart that carries all your supplies such as dust pan, broom, small vacuum, and 3M Scotch Brite Anti-Bacterial Multi-purpose cloth and heavy-duty sponges and scrubs for dusting and scrubbing the floors.

Choosing Cleaning Products

Resist the temptation of buying more cleaning products than what you actually need.  The more products you accumulate at home, the greater the chance they would be misused by children and even your pets at home.

Carefully read all the products’ instruction labels before use.  As a general rule, do not mix different types of products unless it says so on the label.  Keep all cleaning products in the original containers they came in.  Never transfer products to containers you normally use for food and other edibles.  Don’t place them within child’s reach.

Where to start

Start with the areas that tend to get cleaned faster and easier.  The living and dining rooms and the halls are less cluttered and less dirty compared to the bedrooms so it’s best to begin cleaning these areas.  To make sure you don’t miss anything when dusting and mopping a room, start at the door and work around in one direction.  Eliminate clutter by putting away things you don’t use very often. You can get plastic containers to keep the things so they are organized neater. Consider giving away clothes, furniture or things that are still usable but no longer needed.  This cuts down the need to clean when you have fewer things out in the open.  An uncluttered home is better looking, though not ultimately spotless, than one which is dust free but has a lot of odds and ends. Carry a plastic trash bag to catch the contents of ash trays and waste baskets.

Scotch Tapes: Can’t do Without Them

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 by Lena

Ever wonder how the pre-Scotch tape era managed to mend torn books, wrap gifts, temporarily bind a book, do arts and crafts and, tape papers on walls, divide lines on two-toned surfaces, repair ripped window blinds, broken toys, and more?

3M Scotch Mounting Tape

3M Scotch Mounting Tape

The cellophane tape was an offshoot of 3M’s masking tape that was invented by Richard Drew in the 1920s. Drew was inspired to experiment on the world’s first masking tape when he saw how auto painters have trouble making clear dividing lines in two-tone paint jobs. The masking tape was success after several testing wherein it was said that an auto mechanic frustrated at the adhesives applied only at the edges of the masking tape said, “Take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!” Whether it was a tall tale or not, the story caught on and the “Scotch” name applied. The name was soon applied to the range of 3M adhesives.

The cellophane Scotch tape was an inspiration from the cellophane that 3M used to wrap the masking tape. After some experiments and more testing 3M produced a nearly invisible adhesive. The waterproof transparent tape was made from: oils, resins, and rubber; and had a coated backing. From then on 3M’s Scotch tape continued to evolve. Though Scotch tape is a brand name, it has become the generic for all adhesive tapes.

3M Small Hook with Command Adhesive Strips

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by macinger84

A hook is a very useful tool that we often take for granted. We have one in just about any room in our house, holding towels, a photo, or any other object that we deem worthy of hanging. But as useful as hooks are, we are often not that good in placing hooks in the right places. We often end up with nicely placed hooks that we never use, or no hooks in places where we need them. Most “DIY” people just place new hooks where they need them and taking out the ones they don’t need, often leaving unsightly holes.

The 3M command Hook with Command Adhesive Strips are the most efficient solution to the problem of hook placement. This nifty little device has been a favorite in dorm rooms for quite some time because of the quick and easy placement and relative high load capacity. A single package comes with 2 hooks and 4 adhesive command strips so that you can reposition the hooks in case you want to. You might be doubtful about how strong these things are, after all, you’d be hanging stuff from it. The command adhesive strip is rated to hold up to 1lb of weight which is perfect for a great majority of things that are hung on walls. You can use this to hang washcloths, small pictures, and even little air fresheners, the possibilities are almost limitless.

This device is also pretty handy to have around the house even if you still rely fully on those heavy duty hooks. Calling a carpenter just to place a single hook, no matter how convenient it is, is just a waste. Instead of pounding a new hook there yourself and probably end up destroying your wall, you can place the 3M on areas where you want solid hooks put in as a temporary remedy. Once you need a carpenter for something bigger, you can just ask them to replace the 3M hooks with metal ones. This way, you can use the 3M hooks for the meantime and when it’s time to replace them, you already have the markers on where you want the metal hooks put in.

Sometimes we think that we need a hook somewhere but later realize that it isn’t really that much use to you. If you had a metal hook put in or you placed it yourself, removing it would usually leave a nasty hole right there. If you used the 3M hooks, removing it would leave absolutely nothing on it. This gives you the peace of mind when putting new hooks in areas where people might see them.

You can use the 3M small hooks in almost any surface. It would stick to wood concrete and even tile. The benefit of these hooks are very apparent on tiles as going “DIY” on it could cause it to break and cost you even more in repairs. Just remember to not use these hooks on wallpaper or any other weak surface. Because no matter how strong the adhesive strips are, the paper would just tear and the hook would fall.
