Where to start

Start with the areas that tend to get cleaned faster and easier.  The living and dining rooms and the halls are less cluttered and less dirty compared to the bedrooms so it’s best to begin cleaning these areas.  To make sure you don’t miss anything when dusting and mopping a room, start at the door and work around in one direction.  Eliminate clutter by putting away things you don’t use very often. You can get plastic containers to keep the things so they are organized neater. Consider giving away clothes, furniture or things that are still usable but no longer needed.  This cuts down the need to clean when you have fewer things out in the open.  An uncluttered home is better looking, though not ultimately spotless, than one which is dust free but has a lot of odds and ends. Carry a plastic trash bag to catch the contents of ash trays and waste baskets.

The proper order of cleaning household items should be ceiling, walls, windows, doors, blinds, draperies, lamps, shelves, upholstery, furniture surfaces, floors, carpets and rugs.  Rugs will be easier to carry outside for dusting if you roll them first.

Be choosy with your cleaning cloths.  Make sure they’re absorbent and won’t scratch your furniture and appliances.  Once you’ve collected all the dust and dirt, you have to get rid of them.  Shake out the mop outdoors to remove the dust.  If you have a vacuum, cleaning is made much easier.  Do as much as you can in one room before moving on to the next.

Bedrooms would come next.  Change bedspreads, blankets and pillow cases.  Do a good turn of your mattress and flip it over if you have to.  Airing the mattress and pillows under the sun is also advisable to help keep them fresh and clean.

Kitchen appliances should also be cleaned regularly.  Oven racks and broiler pans should be scrubbed to remove stains and oil.  Also rub countertop stains with a damp cloth or sponge with a little chlorine bleach for hard to remove stains.

The bathroom should be rid of mildew and mold by wetting the surfaces with water then spraying them with a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1 quart water, letting it stand before scrubbing, washing and wiping the surfaces dry.

Baking soda is typically used as a leavening ingredient in baking.  However, baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is used in cleaning and deodorizing a myriad of things around the house. You can use it to scrub, polish, deodorize and dissolve.
