Heat Busters and Thirst Quenchers

Monday, May 24th, 2010 by Lena

The El Niño effect is raging worldwide since the winter of 2009-2010. The countries first hit by the heat wave are the ones in Southeast Asia – Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei and more. This is so because these are the countries that first encounter summer.  Reports claim that the El Niño is starting to cool off but! – alas, it is still so humid and hot that once you leave the cool air-conditioned room, you seem like melting chocolate or corn kernels that are about to pop.

Surely there must be something one can do to beat the heat aside from being inside an air-conditioned room 24/7. You can go to the beach to cool off so to speak. No matter how hot the sun is, soaking in the cool sea is one way of beating the heat. You can also opt to soak in the swimming pool or for lack of one, in a tub.

You can stay cool by drinking lots of cold drinks, fresh fruit juices included. Why not gather some of your favorite fruits, blend them in with shaved ice, add some milk and syrup for a thirst quenching drink. If you do not have fresh fruits, just make do with powdered juice or concentrates mixed in a tall glass filled with cubed ice.

Buy your favorite ice cream flavor and make soda floats!  Pour your favorite soda drink into a tall glass. Make sure the soda is cold.  When the bubbles have settled, scoop ice cream into the soda for a float.  Too much calories for you?  Well, you can try using diet soda and sugar-free ice cream. However, the cooling effect will only last from 15 to 20 minutes as it is a fact that any food that is way below your normal body temperature will have a fleeting systemic cooling effect.

Try eating yogurt for longer cooling effect. Gelatin or jelly will make you feel cooler too.

Lay low on too much animal meat. Eat more sea food like fish and crab.  Your best bet is to eat fresh fruits and vegetables that have high water content: watermelon, melon, oranges, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, corn on the cob, summer squash and turnips.  Fruits and veggies that are high in water content will thin the blood that can help release the heat from the body.

battle the summer heat with more fruits

On the other hand, if you don’t mind sweating, you can “spice” up you food by adding fresh ginger, chili, pepper, curry, horseradish and other “hot” condiments to help you perspire. The more you perspire, the more your body cools off. In other words, you can drink hot coffee, perspire a bit then enjoy the refreshing feeling minutes later. Or, you can drink coffee, mocha or chocolate on the rocks.

Cook food the simplest way possible. Steam and sauté. Avoid baking and broiling as these two cooking methods will sure expose you to too much heat.   Avoid cooking food that has so much gravy and sauces as high calorie food will actually make you feel “hotter”.

Also, don’t forget to drink more water to stay healthy and hydrated in this hot dry weather.

Indulge in Chocolate, It Is Good For You

Friday, May 14th, 2010 by Lena

When you were a child, have you ever dreamed of going inside a chocolate factory and wondered what it was like to swim in a river made of chocolate?  What child would not fantasize about chocolate?  Its creamy texture and bittersweet taste are deeply ingrained into our young heads.  If you smother healthy stuff like fruits and grains in chocolate, they will definitely get eaten.  Of course, we also remember our parents telling us that too much chocolate will make our tummy hurt and our teeth fall out.

For many people, chocolate is the ultimate comfort food.  For them, eating a piece of chocolate makes them feel like they are being transported to a time in your childhood when you were still innocent and free of worries.  You may think this is just psychological, but recent studies have shown that there are more health benefits from chocolate apart from just getting good feelings.

Recent studies discovered that chocolate is rich in flavonoids.  These are anti-oxidants that are formed from the combination of amino acids called acetate and phenylalanine.  Flavonoids neutralize the effects we get from free radicals in food and the environment, which are bad for us because they destroy the cells in our bodies.  Did you know that eating 1.5 oz of dark chocolate has the equivalent amount of antioxidants contained in a cup of black tea?  Both of them contain around 800mg of antioxidants, so which would you choose?

Aside from containing antioxidants, chocolate also contains theobromine, which is an alkaloid compound usually found in cacao plants. Theobromine and caffeine are very similar in that they improve blood circulation and can be used as diuretics and heart stimulants.  However, the effects of theobromine are weaker compared to caffeine and the amount of it contained in chocolates are very minimal.  Unfortunately, theobromine poisoning can occur in the elderly and they are cautioned against consuming too much chocolate. This alkaloid compound is also dangerous for pets, who have an inability to digest it.

Most homeowners dream of a lovely garden as much as they dream of their ideal kitchen or family room.  Just imagine a front or back yard that is in full bloom with dozens of flowers, freshly cut grass, with small trees and bushes dotting the scenery.  It makes for a nice setting for a relaxing afternoon tea or the perfect quiet ambience for reading a good book, right?

However, you will realize that dreaming about your ideal garden is the easy part.  Making it a reality is the grueling part of the process.  It takes a lot of hard work, skill and the willingness to know which plants are suitable for your lifestyle and how to take care of them once they have been planted.

Ways to Conserve Water

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 by Lena

Unlike in the Kevin Costner movie-bomb called Waterworld, our water supplies are beginning to dwindle dramatically of late.  This is caused by a number of factors – pollution, overuse, climate change, global warming, et cetera.  Even though our continents are surrounded by vast amounts of water, not all the water is safe enough to drink.

The rivers and streams we pass by on camping or hiking trips may look clean, but you can never be too sure.  Some factory up the river may be dumping toxic waste into the water, you never know.  So it may be advisable to use water filters. You need to treat the water before using is at the campsite.

As we all know, water is quite a valuable natural resource.  Without it, we will have no chance of surviving.  Therefore, we should all do our part in being responsible human beings and conserve water in any way we can.

The first thing to do when wanting to conserve water is to check your faucets and pipes for any leakages, especially if you find that your water usage is unusually high.  If you find any pipe sections that are dripping or are faulty, have them repaired.  Not only will you save on your water bill, you are also not wasting all that good water.

Install a water meter, if you do not already have one.  Once you actually monitor your water usage, you might actually be surprised to know how much you have been using.  Being conscious about how much water you use and trying to cut back on your usage is a good way of conserving water.

Little things like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing the dishes also help conserve water.  Taking quick showers instead of running a full bath is also recommended, as more water is utilized when taking baths.

You may also install low-flow faucets or shower heads to control your water consumption.  Converting the toilet into low flush by installing the proper system is also advisable. The system have an options for full or half flush for different toilet usage. Most of the time, half flush is sufficient to clear the toilet waste.

To water your garden, you do not need to use fresh water all the time.  You can collect rainwater or use the gray water that comes from the used bath, laundry or washing the dishes to water your plants. There is no cause for worry about using gray water on plants because plants will thrive on used water with some compost. Don’t use gray water with high soap content though.  It is even better if you water the garden at night.  This is because water will evaporate quicker if you water during the day.

If you need to let the faucets run off its cold water before showering or washing the dishes, catch the cold running water with a bucket before it becomes hot.  You can use this water for watering the garden or washing the car.

We need to launder our clothes every once in a while.  However, this is not something we need to to on a daily basis.  It is recommended to use the washing machine on a full load in order to conserve water, as well as electricity.  Also, try to be careful about not using too many clothes so that you will not need to launder too often.  Not only will this be good for the environment, but it will also make your clothes last longer.

Youth Trends in the Philippines

Friday, February 26th, 2010 by Lena

The Filipinos are a curios lot. They are very nationalistic and are more than willing to fight, argue, debate and even die for the country. Nationalism is a general trait for nationalism after all means the belief that one’s nation is of utmost concern. This goes without saying that there has been an ongoing thrust for the Filipinos to “buy Filipino”. This drive is to encourage Filipinos to buy goods that are made in the Philippines. However, this is not always the case as imported goods flood the Philippine market. (more…)

Laptop Bags

Laptops have become an essential gadget in today’s society.  It is definitely hard to think and digest on how (only a decade ago) our society was able to function without the convenience of a laptop. Everyone seems to have a laptop just as everyone has a mobile phone. The popularity of these two gadgets may well be rooted to its functionality and mobility for ease in communication. Innovations in technology have made communication in any part of the world possible as long as there are cell sites and internet connection.

Internet addiction – sounds familiar?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 by macinger84

While the medical world holds multiple theories whether Internet Addiction can be categorized as compulsive disorder or behavior or as a type of psychological disorder, the fact remains that it is a alarming practice that is gradually sinking its root deeper and deeper among the young and the adolescents section of the community. As there are two sides of a coin, Internet addition has both benefits and drawbacks.

In the simplest of the terms, devoting too much time glued to the Internet is Internet addition. The general compulsion to sit at the Internet for hours together is what we term as Internet addition. The lure of the World Wide Web is so great that it is beyond the capacity of many to stay away from it thus making themselves the victim of many unwanted situations.

Your virtual world of gaming

An ad for Dungeons and Dragons virtual game

For the beginners in online gaming, MMORPG stands for massively multiplayer online role-playing games. It is a virtual gaming world that a very large amount of players participate in at the same time. Most of the games are fantasy related but not all of them are based on fictional settings. The player controls the characters actions among many other virtual players. MMORPG’s are different from RPG’s (its predecessor role-playing games) because the game’s publisher usually hosts the game on a server, so the game persists and evolves even while a player is offline or away from the keyboard (AFK). These games are played worldwide on a simultaneous level. In 2008 MMORPG pay to play games brought 1.4 billions dollars in revenue. The most popular games have up to 11.5 million subscribers alone. It is a fast growing industry that is attracting many newcomers.
