Handling Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CLF)

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by macinger84

The CFL (compact fluorescent lamp), created in response to the 1973 oil crisis is commonly known as fluorescent lighting. It is a more efficient application of electricity. Over the years the technology has improved. CFL’s come in a variety of choices fix most household fixtures. They aren’t recommended for motion activated lighting or those with dimming features. The expectant lifespan diminishes by 85% with frequent ‘flicks of the switch’. The light they radiate emits 72 lumens (a measurement of light as seen by the naked eye) per watt verses the 17 lumens per watt of the more common household bulb.

What are we doing to our planet!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by macinger84

Our planet earth, the only reason we as humans exist at all. The one thing that connects us all together is this great planet. Some cultures believe that earth was created by a higher being. Others teach that earth is a being of its own. Either way, where is our future and the future of our children heading! Humans, in general, have become so complacent with our desire for comfort and fulfilling our wants that not one measure is going to be drastic enough to cure our on-going destruction to our home, the planet earth.

It is estimated that 2/3 of the planet is covered in saltwater. The remaining surface of the earth is a combination of land and freshwater sources. We have yet to accurately estimate the percentage of the land that is polluted or to the extent of the land that is.

Bio-plastic alternative

Monday, January 4th, 2010 by macinger84

Plastic comes in many forms and can be found in just about everything we buy. It is formed from a waste product of making oil. It is a versatile and long-lasting product. For many years it was a primary choice for packing, molding and segregating harmful or non-useful components. In developed countries, like the United Stated, 1.3 million tons of plastic bags are used each year alone. Every year 12.3 million tons of plastic are in use worldwide and rising. Its uses are dynamic because of its durability and low cost of production. The problem with plastic is that it takes many decades to degrade and become organic material. It is taking up value space in our landfills and chokes rivers and streams. Another problem with plastic is that while the components breakdown, they release carbon particles into the environment.

It isn’t just oxygen anymore

Monday, January 4th, 2010 by macinger84

The average human inhales approximately 20,000 times per day. Every time we breathe air in we inhale vital oxygen that is absorbed into our blood stream. It provides us with about 60% of the energy that we require every day. Did you know though that the air we breathe and take for granted is highly contaminated by unseen particles and gasses that we cannot taste or smell? The fact is, the air all around us is to some degree toxic.

Since the 1970’s many studies have been performed and laws have been enacted to regulate and monitor certain particles and vapors. One study from 2005, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, estimated that 800,000 people die prematurely every year, world wide, from air pollution. Urban areas and countries on the Asian continent, specifically, China, have the highest concentrations and are affected the worst.

Save our Earth

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 by macinger84

If you think, you are not doing adequate efforts for the environment by changing your incandescent light bulbs with LED or CFL lights and composting your kitchen waste, perhaps you are ready to make a deeper assurance to environmental stewardship.

Some of these stratagems might seem a little essential, but they are among the most important actions you can take to shield and conserve Earth’s environment.

Plan well
overpopulationOverpopulation is debatably the world’s most severe environmental problem, as it intensifies all of the other problems. The worldwide population was 3 billion in 1959 and increased to 6 billion in 1999, a raise of 100 percent in 40 years. According to existing projections, the global population will spread out to 9 billion by 2040.Earth is a closed system with restricted resources. As the global population grows, our possessions must elongate to serve more and more populace. In the future, that will no longer be feasible. Finally, we need to overturn this growth tendency by slowly but surely bringing the human being population of our planet back downward to a more controllable size. This means more citizens must decide to have fewer kids. This might sound easy on the surface, but the constrain to reproduce is elementary in all genus and the verdict to limit or give up the experience is an arousing, cultural or spiritual one for many people.

Use Less Water—and Keep It Clean

reduce reuse recycle water

Unsullied, clean water is important to life—no one can survive long without it and yet it is one of the endangered and most scarce resources on our increasingly brittle planet.
Water envelops more than 70 percent of the Earth’s facade, but most of it is salt water. Freshwater supplies are much more confined, and at present one third of the world’s citizens lack right to use the clean drinking water. In the United Nations, 95 percent of the metropolis worldwide still plunks raw trash into their water supplies. Predictably, 80 percent of all sickness and ailments in budding countries can be linked to unhygienic water.

Eat sensibly
Eating sensibly also means consuming less meat and less animal products for example dairy products and eggs, or possibly none at all. It is an issue of good stewardship of our limited resources.

Renewable_EnergyPreserve Energy—and move on to Renewable Energy

Walk, or use public transportation more than your own vehicles. Not only will you be in good health and help to safeguard valuable energy resources, you will also hoard money. As per the study by the American Public Transportation Association, people that use public haulage can lessen their domestic expenses by $6,200 per annum, more than the standard U.S. household spends on foodstuff each year.

Conserve and Go Green
conserve-energyThere are many other ways you can save energy—like turning lights off and unplugging your electrical appliances when you are not using them, not overcooling or overheating, your office and home. One way to initiate is to get a free energy inspection from your local utility. Choose renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. For instance, many civic utilities now offer green energy options so that you may get all or at least some of your electricity from solar, wind, or other renewable sources of energy.

Do your part, reduce, reuse and recycle

Friday, December 4th, 2009 by macinger84

Recycling engrosses gathering goods that have attained the end of their existence and handing them or their elements into components to assemble fresh goods. The three Rs of environmentalism are reduce (consumption), reuse (and/or repurpose), and recycle.

recycle_cans_bottles_huge

Reduce plastic usage, recycling isn't that simple

Recycling is not that green as compared to reducing or reusing, as that does not produce greenhouse gases, aim to reuse and reduce first and principally. Broken glass can be changed into bottles by recycling, but it is supposed to go through a mechanized procedure to get there, and that procedure uses energy. In a perfect world, the power would be produced using renewable supply such as hydro, wind, and solar power with the intention that the recycling procedure is entirely green. However, in the actual world, that is not generally, how it works.

Are we entering an ice age soon?

History of global warming

temperature history

The Earth’s ambiance is continuously varying eventually. Numerous climatologists deem that the heat of the Earth gradually ebb and flow in due course. Actually, a number of environmentalists guesstimate that amid 15,000 and large sheets of ice covered 30,000 years past the world. This period was identified as the Ice Age. As the hotness of the Earth begins to go up 7,000 years back, the Ice Age ended.

What will happen if we don’t stop burning

Global warming: what will happen if we don’t stop burning our resources and polluting our earth

Global warning is one of the biggest challenges we are facing in this 21st century. It is a huge risk to the very existence of life on earth. A lot of unnatural calamities are taking place around us as a result of this global warning. Drastic weather changes, snow caps melting, sea level rising etc are some of the changes to list.

This is one problem which is human made and it is unto us humans only to help limit the damage caused so far. The damage cannot be undone for sure but we can surely make an effort to keep it under control and help other non-human life to co-exist.
