How to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton

iphone-wallpaper-louis-vuitton-logoThere are so many counterfeit or fake versions of designer handbags nowadays.  Counterfeit manufacturers are getting good at copying the real thing.  Sometimes a trained eye can still be fooled.  But with practice, you can easily spot a fake LV bag even if it can pass for the genuine article.   Know these general authenticity indicators before making that big purchase:

Stitching: All LV bags are hand-stitched.  Stitching should be very even and regular. You will not see loose threads or ends on an authentic Louis Vuitton bag.  There should be the same number of stitches on locations like the handle and the tab.

Monogram placement: The monogram should be able to indicate its authenticity.  Louis Vuitton is very particular on the manner each monogram is placed on each bag.  Monogram placement is done carefully and is consistent. It will not be irregular or cut off. It will appear the same on each style of bag.

Leather: The straps are made from genuine, untreated leather from crocodile, boa, lambskin and even camel.   If new, the leather will appear a very pale yellow. It will eventually develop a natural patina and change into a darker shade of color. The trim is done is Vachetta and will also change and tan naturally as the bag ages. Imitations are done in a lighter tan trim or an obvious aged trim that will never change with age.

Made in: When you see an LV bag not made in France, it does not necessarily mean that it’s a fake.  Nowadays you will see LV bags in the market that are made in the US, Spain, Germany and in Italy.  Although those not in the know would assume that all LV bags not made in France are fakes.

The Fonts: Just like other big name bag brands, Louis Vuitton uses a very specific font.  But fake manufacturers are getting better at copying so be very careful

Tags: This is where most counterfeiters make a big mistake.  They usually attach the tag to the bag when the tag of an authentic LV bag is never attached to the bag itself.  The bag may come with a tag, but it is simply placed in the purse or dust bag.

Lining: If the bag is supposed to be lined in with a certain material, let’s say, with a brown cotton canvas, then it should be lined with such.  If it is lined with a suede material or other material besides cotton canvass, then you know it’s a fake.  So it’s still best to research a certain style before buying one.
