How to Prepare for a Hike

Hiking is a fun and an affordable activity that you and your family could enjoy. The preparation is minimal in terms of items, gadgets and physical condition. As long as you are physically active and have no known debilitating disease that might need emergency procedure, then you can definitely hike.

Hiking is good fun with the family

What are the basics in preparing for a hike? First thing to consider is where do you plan on hiking? You need to pick the degree of difficulty of your hike trail.  There are trail parks that you can consider. Do a research and browse on different trails that are offered in and around your area. If you are a seasoned hiker, then maybe you can go a little further and plan a more challenging climb. After figuring out the what, when and where of your hike then pack your bag!

Don’t forget your hiking boots. You need to wear real comfortable, slip-proof, and water-resistant hiking boots. You can’t go hiking wearing thong slippers or flimsy sandals. Remember to wear thick socks to cushion your feet too. The hiking boots are protection for any rock or stone or insect that you could step on.

Pack appropriately, you don't want to be carrying heavy baggages.

Pack your rain gear. You can never be too sure with the weather. It might be sunny and bright in the morning but rain could come in the afternoon. Pack a light parka or waterproof wind breaker. A waterproof poncho could also come in handy. Don’t forget to pack an extra shirt, underpants, small towel and shorts.

Make sure you have your bottled water with you. It is essential to rehydrate when hiking. The heat of the sun could cause you undue discomfort. You might even suffer from dehydration or heat stroke. For an average hike a liter of water is sufficient. However, there are cases wherein you might run out of safe water to drink. No sweat. It is best to get a SteriPen Classic Water Purifier. It uses UV light to sterilize water.  You never have to worry against running out of potable water to drink even in the middle of nowhere.

Don’t forget your backpack! Make sure you have the necessary items like: a map of the area and a compass, sunblock, first aid kit, insect repellant, a hat and sunglasses, wet wipes, flashlight, a Swiss knife, and a lighter. It is always best to come prepared but don’t over pack as a heavy load could be too much for even the seasoned hiker.

Pack what you need

Should you bring a mobile phone? Well, why not! Technology is at your fingertips so bring one in case of emergency. Should you bring your laptop and wireless broadband?  What about your iPod? The essence of a hike is for you to enjoy nature and not for you to take out all your high-tech gear out to nature.
