Gardening Tips

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by Lena

There is something restful and relaxing in being in a beautiful garden. The garden can take on the form of a formal rose garden or an informal hodgepodge of a variety of flowers or a Japanese rock garden or even an herbal garden. A few potted flower pots could be the only garden that you can keep. No matter, the essence of a garden is never lost whatever its type or size is.

Keeping a garden is a breeze for some “green thumbs”. For others, starting one is easy enough but keeping the garden thriving is not. After endless hours spent “toiling” under the hot sun, split nails et al. the flower bed still refuse to “live”, much less bear flowers! Here are some helpful garden tips.

Get the right kind of soil for your garden. You just don’t go about buying a truckload of “garden” soil without analyzing your existing soil. Have a qualified person determine the deficiencies of your soil. You might need to feed the soil with nutrients and minerals to make it a good soil for your flower beds. An organic fertilizer, the slow release kind, is greatly recommended for healthy soils. Healthy soil translates to healthy plants

Group plants accordingly. Put in one spot all plants that need water twice a day. In one corner, group all those plant that need not be watered on a daily basis. If you have a vegetable garden, group those that need to be harvested together. It is all about having the right plant at the right place. You can mix-match blooms of different colors and variety for effect.

Peony Bloom

Peony Bloom

Choose low-maintenance perennials for your blooms. This is not to say that you opt out of exotic blooms but if you are tight on effort and time, maintaining perennials is easy enough. A novice gardener is advised not to try his hands on exotic and hard-to-maintain blooms like orchids. Some suggested perennials are: peony, thistle, foam flower, coral bells, cone-flowers, and blazing stars. Of course you still need to water these perennials, weed them at all. Remember to pick the ones suited to your location and give them time to establish.

Mulch your flower beds. Mulch makes a garden more attractive but its real purpose is to retain moisture, prevents the freezing of roots and stops weeds from growing around the flowerbeds. It even helps retain the fertilizers in the soil. The mulch would save you time in weeding, watering and fertilizing.

Lady Bug

Lady Bug

Encourage birds and bees to come in your garden. The birds will eat the insects while the bees will help in pollination. Having a bird bath in your garden will encourage birds to drop by in your garden and planting blooms that attract bees will do your garden good too. Believe it or not, not all insects are “bad”.  Bees, Green Lacewing, Ladybug, big-eyed bug, assassin bug, damsel bug, are just some beneficial bugs that you can out in your garden. Don’t know where to get those bugs? You can order them from your local nursery and even online.

Keeping a garden is not a walk in the park but the wonderful sense of fulfillment and relaxation you would experience is worth the effort.

Swiss Istor Knife Sharpeners

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by macinger84

Knives are tools that we can’t live without. We use it everyday in our homes and even outside when we go on camping trips. The types of knives also varies depending on the intended use for the specific knife. There are thick and heavy knives for chopping meat, thin and flexible ones for filleting, and then there are multi-purpose knives that are both small and handy enough to carry around for whatever need that arises. The quality of knives have also improved over the years. From the crude knives that were available before, we now have stainless knives that are very sharp and made out of very durable metals which can withstand great amounts of abuse before losing some of their sharpness. But regardless of how advanced our knives are, sooner or later we would have to sharpen them.

11

Knife sharpeners have also accompanied knives as soon as they were invented as older knives have a tendency of losing their edge after a relatively short time. The sharpeners themselves have also evolved  to become smaller, lighter, and be more durable for prolonged use. They might not be used that often because of the improvements in the knives, they are still quite essential to maintaining the edge on our cheap or very expensive knife sets.

22

Istor, a company that is located in the city of Frauenfeld, invented and has been manufacturing the original Swiss Knife Sharpener since 1964. The knife sharpener from Istor are 100% Swiss made and not outsourced to other companies somewhere else. With Istor, you are assured of the quality and durability of their products. Their line of Swiss Knife Sharpeners come in a wide selection that lets you pick one or more to fit specific sets in your house. They have larger sharpeners that suits use within the kitchen where knives can range from a small fillet knife to large cleavers. Though good for the kitchen, the same might not be true for camping trips or in your RV or boat. For these purposes, Istor also produces smaller Swiss Knife Sharpeners that are more portable, even down to pocket sized sharpeners. This means that there is a sharpener for every event, outing, or vehicle.

Knives and knife sharpeners are tools that should go together. Although knife sharpeners might not be used that often, it is when you need it that counts. Having one handy at all times could mean the difference between a sharp cut or a dull knife.

Lampe Berger

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by macinger84

Lampe Berger is the producer of fragrance lamps that are not only beautiful but are also fully functional in eliminating bad odors and engulfing your house in fragrance. Based on the technology that was discovered by Maurice Berger in France more than a hundred years ago for uses in medical establishments, it has evolved into the product that you see today. It was initially intended to eliminate the bacteria in the air and neutralize foul odors which was a major issue in hospitals back then, but better technologies have replaced its use in hospitals. It can now be used in homes to neutralize unpleasant odors that can come from pets, smoking cigars, or even from the food. Adding a certain fragrance to the mix, freshens the air and makes it more pleasant.

11

The mixture that is used in a fragrance lamp is composed out of 90% isoprophyl alcohol, which is the reason behind its bacteria killing ability. To use it, the wick should be lighted for roughly three minutes in order to bring up to temperature enough to evaporate the mixture. After which, the light is put out and the aroma of the lamp begins fill the room.

22

There are a lot of advantages over using the Lampe Berger over using traditional methods like scented candles or air fresheners. Air fresheners just add a scent to the air and does nothing to eliminate the odors and the resulting mix might end up worse. The fragrance of air fresheners also last for a relatively short period of time and begins to fade soon after it is sprayed. Scented candles fill the room with fragrance for as long as it remains lighted, this is both a good and bad thing. Scented candles can keep your room smelling good for a considerably longer period of time but the fact that it should remain lighted poses a fire hazard. This is not a problem with the Lampe Berger as the light only lasts for three minutes and even if the lamp falls off the table, you only loss the content of the lamp and not your whole house.

Since the Lampe Berger uses a glass container, it can be refilled with whatever new fragrance you like in case you get tired of the one you have now. This means that you would not have to keep replacing the current lamp that you have. But because of the long time that Lampe Berger has been making these lamps, they are now considered as collectors items and the first lamps made are now antiques. This comes as no surprise as the glass containers of Lampe Berger are very elegant and stylish.

IPod Accessories

Monday, September 28th, 2009 by Lena

Remember the first portable cassette tape players of the 80’s? What about the portable CD players of the 90’s? Looking back it is kind of amazing how fast technology evolved. It seems like companies all over the world are in the (unspoken) race of trying to out-invent and out-produce each other in the crazy bid to be the first to produce the smallest and lightest and most innovative product, ever.

Take the iPod. The mp3 player is a brand launched by Apple sometime in 2001. The iPod’s evolution from a hard drive-based model to a touch screen and a video capable portable media player is just amazing. There are plenty of copycats out there but iPod is the one to have.

Great products have “great” accessories. Apple has the passion and the obsession to continually improve their products. It is rather obvious that everyone seems to own an mp3 of some sorts – iPod or not – so to continue Apple’s quest for excellence and convenience, the company has thought of some really cool accessories for iPod.

There are basically five iPod types: the iPod classics (first generation mp3s), the iPod Nano, iPod mini, the Shuffle and the iPod video. All these products have their own set of accessories. Apple has its own line of accessories but the international market is littered with iPod accessories from other manufacturers too.

Earphones are included in an iPod kit. The basic earbud headphone is good enough for starters but once you start downloading songs or even movies in his unit, you would want better quality earphones: noise-canceling or sound-isolation headsets are available for an uninterrupted time of easy listening. Waterproof earphones? Yes, there are those too.

IPods run on tiny rechargeable batteries. To charge an iPod you need a charging dock. If a connection to stereo speakers or to a home theater is an option for you then get the proper cable jack for the iPod for those functions.

The beauty of an iPod is that you can practically take it anywhere with you. If you want the hype and jive of music while jogging or running, the ever-reliable- minds at Apple thought of iPod armbands. Just strap the iPod then go hit the road or start pumping irons in groove with your music.

Another perfect companion (and accessory) for the iPod is the portable mini speaker. Share you’re more than 4 GB music with your friends in the comfort of your home or out in the backyard or even at the beach. Some models even come with remotes.

iPod Armband

Having saved enough money to buy that iPod made you obsessive with those little scratches that seems to have appeared out of nowhere in your unit’s surface and screen! What to do? You can buy a generic plastic case or a film cover for the screen. But a favorite iPod case is the cutesy iPod socks. They come in six beautiful colors that I bet you can’t help but buy them all.

If you are a jet setter and hop from one place to another, you need a world travel adaptor kit or on a lesser degree, an Apple USB power adaptor. For your car, get an ipod mini 4 in 1 car kit.

There are plenty of generic brands and some named brands that manufacture accessories for the iPod. The thing is it is better to use Apple accessories for Apple products.

Household Cleaning Tips

Monday, September 28th, 2009 by Lena

In today’s world of high technology, there are still some things that cannot be solved by it. Sure you can use vacuum for cleaning carpets and use the touchpad sensor washing machine for washing a load but how can you possibly take out the odor from the smelly sink?  Before tackling the issue of household cleaning tips, here are some general pointers in housecleaning.

Clean the house from top to bottom. Do not go about puttering in the house cleaning anything that takes your fancy. Start at the top where the cobwebs are, then dust furniture and counters, then do the floor last. Doing it the other way around would be silly as starting off with the floor and working your way up would naturally bring down the dirt and dust to the already clean floor and furniture.

Each sponge should have its own use. Do not use the kitchen sponge to use the toilet or vice-versa. Do not use the toilet bowl sponge in cleaning the bathroom sink. Again! Each room should have its own sponge. Having made those two points, here are some home cleaning tips using  everyday household products.

Baking soda is typically used as a leavening ingredient in baking.  However, baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is used in cleaning and deodorizing a myriad of things around the house. You can use it to scrub, polish, deodorize and dissolve.

Put some baking soda on a damp sponge and wipe away greasy counters and oven. Mix ¼ cup baking soda with ½ cup vinegar and pour into the bathroom lavatory or kitchen sink. This reactive mixture can keep pipes clean, dissolve mineral build-up inside pipes and eliminate odors.  Remember to pour hot water on the drain after about 10 minutes.

A sure fire carpet cleaning tips is to sprinkle some baking soda on an odorous carpet then vacuum it the following day. The bad smell will be eliminated. However, if the carpet is really, really dirty and stinks to high heavens, have it professionally cleaned.

vinegar and baking soda

You can save up on glass cleaners by using table vinegar for cleaning window panes and glass surfaces. Mix equal portions of vinegar, ammonia and rubbing alcohol.  Put the mixture in a spray container then add some water. Presto! – Instant glass cleaner at half the price.

Tired of cleaning out those lime scale on kettles and pots?  Mix vinegar and water in the kettle, bring to a boil, let it cool and leave overnight. Rinse well in the morning. You might have to rinse again until the vinegar smell is gon

If your kitchen is ultra modern with stainless steel counter tops and appliances, cleaning them with abrasives is a big no.  It is best to wipe the stainless steel with damp cloth and finish with baby oil for a quick shine. Minor scratches will be avoided too.

What is the significance of using all these natural household products for cleaning whereas there are more convenient commercial cleaning products in the market today? Using these natural products can save you money and are far less hazardous to you and your family’s health. Go green!

What’s Your Favorite Color?

Monday, September 28th, 2009 by Lena

Many preconceptions come about when it comes to the favorite colors of men and women. Many people think that man’s favorite color is blue and that women prefer pink. However, men and women are more similar than perceived, as both genders prefer blue over any other color. Furthermore, both gender’s second favorite color is green.

33Some may think that it is rather odd that women prefer blue and green because they are widely thought of as masculine colors. Men strongly relate to blue as it is oftentimes associated with intelligence, stability and authority figures. Green, on the other hand, symbolizes renewal, growth, health and the environment. Women most likely favor these colors due also to their cool nature. Many women with strong personalities also believe that feminine colors like pink and pastels are perceived to girly and not suitable for their image.

Gender preferences in color drastically change down the list, as man’s third favorite color is black. This is probably due to the fact that cultural and social norms indicate that men wear less colorful attire than women. Certainly enough, men wear black mostly during formal affairs. Women on the other hand, prefer the complete opposite. The third favorite color of women is turquoise, which is combination of blue and green. Although it is also a cool shade, men usually shy away from this color. Turquoise is followed by purple, pink and lavender in the woman’s list of favorite colors. These colors are associated with either flowers or gemstones and are widely perceived as very feminine colors. Lavender is a popular choice for women who feel that they have outgrown the innocence exuded by pink. To summarize, men generally prefer bright but cool colors, while women prefer soft or pastel colors in addition to blue and green.

Generally, men detest the color pink, despite its calming effect, because it is commonly associated with little girls that are made of sugar, spice and everything nice. Men who profess to like pink are readily teased as being gay or homosexual. In recent years, however, the growing population of metrosexual males resulted in the existence of the tagline “real men wear pink.” Before, where man’s boutiques only carry neutral and cool colors of clothes, they now also offer pink sweaters and dress shirts.

44

In the subject of clothing prints and designs that come with the colors, specific subgroups of people prefer certain colors and designs over others. Hippies, for example, prefer earthy or warm colored clothes with floral or organic designs. They would use various shades of yellow, brown and red. Chavs or youths who engage in antisocial behavior, have taken a liking to wearing black, white or blue track suits and baggy hoodies manufactured by popular sports brands. Floral patterned clothes depict a spring or summery feel and are usually worn by women, mostly during the warmer months. A certain type of floral patterned shirts in either red, blue or yellow are also worn by men, and are usually worn during vacations in tropical locations. These shirts, however, are not worn at any other time and would be deemed inappropriate.

Compass

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 by macinger84

A compass is a tool that has been in use for centuries. This very simplistic device points us in the right direction by detecting the magnetic field of the earth and orienting itself properly. From this, you can find out the proper direction that you should be heading. This device has proven itself time and again in the hands of travellers who navigates thousands of miles with just the aid of a compass and a map.

55

Invented in China before the 2nd century, the compass was created as a tool in finding the proper orientation of things in the immediate surroundings. This practice, called Feng Shui, is still alive and practiced widely in the world today, even in the western world. Its navigational use was not discovered until the 11th century and has been widely used since then. Today, there are many types of compasses available. Traditional models are made out of a magnetic needle that is encased in a fluid to allow the needle to move freely. Newer models that use a gyrocompass instead of the earth’s magnetic field can point to the earth’s true north instead of the magnetic north. They are also more accurate as they are not affected by other magnetic sources or electrical circuits. Despite these advantages, older models still exist because of their durability and maintenance-free nature.

66

Today, most compasses that are used for navigation are already embedded in vehicles while hand held devices are mostly for sporting events and hobbyists. Events like orienteering matches teams against each other in navigating a specific terrain with the use of a compass and a map. Soldiers also carry a compass and a map in case they get separated in the middle of combat.

The Silva company of Sweden, which has been a leading manufacturer of outdoor gear since 1928 also provides a line of compasses for a multitude of purposes. Silva Sweden is a well known supplier of compasses to the armed forces of many countries, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, and of course Sweden. They are providing a wide range of compasses from the simple Expedition 3 and 4 series to the more complex Expedition 54 that includes sophisticated sighting mechanisms. All compasses from the Silva company is equipped with luminous lighting that can glow for some time while other compasses are equipped with battery powered light that makes them ideal for night time use. Depending on your needs, the Silva company can provide you with the right tool that is booth durable and reliable to get you where you want to go.

Cyalume Chemical Light sticks

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 by macinger84

Light is a necessity at night when the sun is shining on the other side of the world. During normal days, we get our lights from fluorescent tubes or the newer CFL bulbs that consume less power. This light sources are powered by our electric company. But during emergency cases, the infrastructure that delivers electricity from the plant to our homes and offices might go down leaving us in the darkness. For these cases, we often resort to emergency lights that provides us with light for a limited time period.

11

The most common emergency lights are the rechargeable types that uses a battery to store a certain amount of electricity. This can then be used during outages for lighting or other purposes. The problem with devices that use a battery is the lifespan of the battery and whether it contains enough electricity. A battery leaks electricity all the time and it needs to be topped up all the time to maintain its full charge. This in turn slowly shortens the life span of the battery. This can lead to the emergency device to fail or have a shorter service time during the actual emergency; this is more apparent in older devices.

The Cyalume chemical light sticks do not rely on electricity in producing light, instead it uses a chemical reaction that provides light as a byproduct. Since it does not rely on electricity, it is also immune to the problems that afflicts electrical emergency lights. Cyalume light sticks can be stored for extended periods without any worries of failure; low intensity sticks can last up to four years while high intensity sticks can last for one. Usage is also fairly simple as you would only need to snap and shake the stick to start the mixing of the chemicals, it would then start to glow.

The number of applications that the Cyalume chemical light sticks can be used for is virtually limitless. Aside from emergency lighting in buildings in case the power goes out, it can also be used as markers for rescue operations. The glow of these sticks can be seen a mile away at night, making it a good addition to flares or smoke signals in a vessel, especially in seafaring vessels because it is waterproof. Aside from its practical uses, it can also be used at parties as accent lights. The wide variety of colors makes it a fun and durable light source for young people.

22

The price of each light stick might be relatively high considering that it can only be used once. But since emergencies are few and far in between, it might actually be cheaper to use these sticks instead of rechargeable lights that are much more expensive and slowly deteriorates over time. Buying in bulk should also lessen the cost; even down to almost half at the highest quantity.
